Scenic Rim Luxury hike

Sixty kilometres through ancient Gondwana rainforest, rugged escarpments and remote wilderness lodges. Beginning in Brisbane, this six-day guided hike through Queensland's Scenic Rim combines genuine physical challenge with exceptional food, boutique eco-camps and sweeping 360° views from Bare Rock.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Welcome to the Mountains Private transfer from Brisbane (~1.5–2 hrs) to Hidden Peaks Cabins. Afternoon tea overlooking the countryside. Welcome dinner with seasonal local produce and regional wines.

Day 2 — Into the Wilderness Climb through dry sclerophyll forest with sweeping valley views — around 10km, including a short ladder climb. Arrive at Mt Mistake Farmhouse for hot showers and a chef-prepared dinner.

Day 3 — Rainforest Trails Enter ancient Gondwana rainforest via historic logging tracks — around 18km. The trail descends into a spectacular natural amphitheatre. Afternoon on the viewing deck at Amphitheatre Eco Camp.

Day 4 — Remote Valleys Deep into the rainforest through valleys, boulder fields and towering blue gums — around 16km. Guides lead lesser-known trails through pristine wilderness with rainforest creeks along the way. Overnight at Timber Getters Eco Camp.

Day 5 — Bare Rock & Return Dense rainforest with enormous buttressed trees leads to Bare Rock — sweeping 360° views of the Scenic Rim, around 16km. Descend and transfer back to Hidden Peaks Cabins for a celebratory final dinner around the fire pit.

Day 6 — Scenic Rim to Brisbane Relaxed breakfast overlooking the mountains. Mid-morning private transfer returns you to Brisbane by late morning or early afternoon.

All prices are per person and fully inclusive as outlined below. Your journey is privately hosted by Terrain & Tide on arrival and departure days, including transfers and your first-night dinner and stay. The four-day guided walk is operated by our trail partner in a small group setting, with your own private twin or double room at each night's lodge or eco-camp.

    • Anyone who has always wanted to complete the Scenic Rim Trail but wanted expert guides, great food and comfortable accommodation rather than carrying everything themselves

    • Enjoy walking for extended periods and find satisfaction in covering real distance on foot

    • Want to feel genuinely immersed in wilderness — ancient rainforest, dramatic escarpments and remote valleys that most people never see

    • Appreciate the combination of physical challenge and genuine comfort — push yourself during the day, eat well and sleep well at night

    • Love wildlife, birds and old-growth forest — this trail has some of the best of all three

    • Want to arrive somewhere under your own steam — Bare Rock on Day 5 is one of the great viewpoints in South East Queensland and you'll have earned every metre of it

    • You're not comfortable walking 15-18km per day with elevation gain — this is the most physically demanding journey we offer

    • You have knee, hip or ankle issues that make extended downhill walking uncomfortable

    • You're expecting resort-style amenities every night — accommodation is eco-camps and mountain cabins, comfortable but purposefully simple

    • You prefer vehicle-based exploration or want the option to opt out of physical activity on any given day

    • You need guaranteed phone or internet connectivity — you'll be genuinely off-grid for most of the journey and that's exactly the point

    • Fitness level: Moderate to challenging. Around 60km over four days, including rock scrambling and a short ladder climb. The most demanding journey we offer.

    • Best time to travel: Year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking conditions.

    • What to bring: Sturdy hiking boots (worn in), wet weather gear, and a daypack for trail essentials.

    • Accommodation: Mountain cabins on Days 1 & 5, wilderness eco-camps on Days 2–4. Twin or double share. description

Where you stay

Boutique eco-camps

Your nights on the Scenic Rim are spent in the trail's own boutique eco-camps — Timber Getters, Amphitheatre and more — architect-designed, sustainably built and tucked deep in Main Range National Park. Each has a private deck and louvred windows that open to the forest, with a luxury bed and a hot shower waiting at the end of each day's walk.

Scenic Rim Luxury Hike - Packing List

    • Lightweight hiking pants (1-2 pairs — wearing the same pair daily is standard practice on trail)

    • Lightweight long sleeve shirts (2-3)

    • Fleece jumper or mid-layer

    • Warm insulated jacket — puffer style, essential even in warmer months

    • One set of comfortable evening wear for the duration

    • Thermals, gloves, beanie and buff/scarf — Queensland mountain winters are genuinely cold

    • Pyjamas and underwear

    • Quick-dry hiking socks (enough for 6 days)

    • Swimmers — required for some accommodation stops along the trail

    • Well worn-in hiking shoes or boots with good grip — not new, must be broken in before arrival

    • Camp shoes or thongs for evenings

    • Day pack with waist belt, minimum 23L — running vests are not suitable

    • Water bottles or bladder, minimum 2.5L (3L in warmer months)

    • Hiking poles — provided if you don't have your own

    • Quality rain jacket — non-negotiable on this trail

    • Head torch and spare batteries

    • Toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss

    • Deodorant

    • Lip balm with SPF

    • Chafe cream — essential for multi-day hiking

    • Sunscreen SPF 50+

    • Insect repellent

    • Personal medications

    • Sanitary items as required

    • Cooling neck towel for warmer months

    • Sun hat and sunglasses

    • Binoculars — the birdlife on this trail is exceptional

    • Gaiters for wet or muddy conditions

    • Plastic bag or dry bag for dirty clothes

    • Photo ID

    • Travel insurance details

    • Emergency contact information

    • Any dietary requirement notes for your guide

    • Cash or card for any personal purchases along the way

    • Phone and charger

    • Camera — the views from Bare Rock alone justify bringing one

    • Portable battery pack

    • Cotton clothing — absorbs sweat, stays wet, gets cold. Synthetic or merino only

    • New hiking boots — blisters on Day 1 will ruin the experience

    • Excessive valuables — you're in the bush for 6 days

    • Anything you'd be devastated to lose or damage

  • Option 1 — Luggage porterage (recommended): $400 per person
    Your main bag is transferred between all camps while you hike. Pack everything into a soft water-resistant duffel, maximum 12kg. You never have to think about it again. For a 60km trail over 6 days, most guests take this option and don't look back.

    Option 2 — Self-carry
    If you prefer to carry your own gear, you'll need a well-fitted, technical hiking pack of 50-65L with an integrated or separate rain cover. Your pack including all contents should not exceed 12kg — every extra kilogram matters at kilometre 50. Packing light is a skill worth practising before you arrive.
